FAQ

Quick answers about EarthView — a real-time geospatial awareness display for seismic activity, orbital tracking, and environmental context.

What does EarthView show?

EarthView includes a full-screen global map with day/night overlay and world clocks; live earthquakes from the past 24 hours; volcanoes from the USGS Catalog; tectonic plate boundaries; ISS & Tiangong (CSS) tracking (position, trail, altitude, and speed); two selectable amateur satellites with footprint rings and in-view indicators; and a location (station/QTH) marker with local weather context. For a full feature overview, see Documentation.

Volcano and plate boundary overlays can be switched on or off from within the app, and Earth View remembers your preferences between sessions.

What operating systems does EarthView support?

EarthView is browser-based and OS-agnostic. It runs full-screen in any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari) on Windows, macOS, or Linux. For best results, keep your browser updated and use a 1080p or 4K display on your computer. See Documentation for system requirements.

Is the data real-time?

EarthView is designed for near real-time situational awareness, with update intervals chosen for stability and clarity:

  • Earthquakes & volcanoes: Earthquakes are pulled from the USGS 24-hour GeoJSON feed on a regular interval; delays can occur at the source. The volcano overlay is based on the USGS catalog plus a curated list of “volcanoes of interest” and is intentionally not real-time.
  • Satellites (ISS, CSS, SAT 1 / SAT 2): Satellite positions are computed from orbital elements (TLE/OMM). Earth View starts with embedded TLEs so you see motion immediately, then refreshes from live CelesTrak feeds when internet is available. A status line indicates when TLEs were last updated and whether they are fresh or stale.
  • Day/night terminator & clocks: The grayline and clocks are computed locally on your device and update continuously.
  • Weather & alerts: Location (station/QTH) weather and alert data are fetched on a schedule and may lag the upstream provider slightly.

For data source details, see Third-Party Notices & Data Credits.

Which browsers and screens are supported?

Modern Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge), Firefox, and Safari are supported. 1080p and 4K single displays on your computer look best for running EarthView full-screen. See Documentation for recommended display configurations.

Does it work offline?

Yes, with reduced capability. EarthView is designed to be resilient when the network drops:

  • Continues working: The map, day/night grayline, clocks, location (station/QTH) marker, and satellite propagation continue using internal models and the last-known orbital elements.
  • Cached last-good data: Recent earthquake, volcano, weather, and TLE data are cached locally and can be displayed for a period even if fresh updates are unavailable.
  • Stops receiving new data: No new earthquakes, updated weather/alerts, or new TLEs will be fetched until internet access returns.

A feed-status line in the interface shows which data sources are currently fresh, stale, or unavailable. See Documentation for a detailed description of offline behavior.

What data sources does EarthView use?

Earth View uses public and curated data sources including:

  • USGS — Earthquakes & volcano catalog
  • PB2002 — Tectonic plate boundaries
  • Natural Earth — Coastlines and base map components
  • CelesTrak — Orbital elements (TLE/OMM) for ISS, Tiangong, and amateur satellites
  • MET Norway — Local weather forecasts
  • NWS (where available) — Weather alerts

The volcano overlay is a curated layer maintained by The Earth Shack Software LLC, based on USGS data plus a hand-selected list of “volcanoes of interest.” See the full list in Third-Party Notices & Data Credits.

What are the installation steps?
  1. Complete your purchase and download the package.
  2. Unzip the folder.
  3. Open the EarthView HTML file in a supported browser on your computer.

See the Documentation page for a full installation guide.

How often are updates released?

Updates are released as needed for fixes and improvements. Check your order email for download links or contact support if you need assistance. You can also view the latest changes in Release Notes.

What’s the license?

EarthView is offered as a single-user license for one person, installed on one computer at a time. See the full License Agreement (EULA) and Terms of Use for details, including restrictions on sharing and redistribution.

Do you collect personal data?

EarthView requests data directly from public APIs in your browser; the application itself does not require accounts or logins. For website and purchase-related details, see our Privacy Policy.
